Pamela M. Johnson is a two-time Hue-Man bestselling author, publisher, PR strategist and speaker from San Francisco’s Lakeview neighborhood. Offered a two-book deal by a major New York publisher, she chose instead to publish independently, founding Macavelli Press with the backing of her mentor, investment banker and attorney Calvin B. Grigsby.
Her debut novel, From a Hard Rock to a Gem: A Memoir of a Lost Soul, sold more than 10,000 copies, reached Barnes & Noble, Borders and more than 200 independent bookstores through national distribution deals with Ingram and Baker & Taylor, and became suggested reading in college courses at NYU and the University of Wisconsin–Oshkosh. From a Hard Rock to a Gem and I’ll Cry Tomorrow both made the bestseller list at Harlem’s Hue-Man Bookstore. Her guide Can’t Get a Book Deal… Now What? walks writers through self-publishing step by step.
As founder and CEO of The Johnson Agency PR, Pamela provides media relations, stakeholder outreach, litigation PR, crisis management and reputation defense, and has helped clients share their stories on outlets including Oprah, Good Morning America, The Today Show and CBS Radio. After losing 140 pounds, she founded Eat the Weight Off, a wellness community built from her own journey, along with its fitness platform Burn and its community site Connections.
She holds an Associate in Liberal Arts from Skyline College, a bachelor’s degree from San Francisco State University in Speech and Communications with a Special Major in Public Relations/Organizational Management, and a Master of Arts in Humanities and Leadership from New College of California, where she wrote her thesis, “How His Life Led to His Work: The Poetry of Tupac Amaru Shakur.”
